Online Access

What is it? Put simply its a 24 hours a day, 7 days a week means of contacting your GP surgery and accessing your medical record.

There are many benefits to using our online services;
  • Book, change or cancel an appointment
  • View and order medications
  • See my test results
  • See my hospital letters
  • View a summary of my health record
  • Share my medical record
  • Change my nominated pharmacy
There are 2 systems in use currently. The new NHS app. And the older Patient Access system. If you haven't started to use Online Access then we would advise you consider the NHS App as your preferred option. It has several advantages over the older patient access system.

The NHS App

This is the new kid on the block. Launched in 2019. One of the main advantages is the ease of registration. Using the Government gateway you can register without needing to ask for username and password from your GP surgery. But it is only available as an app for a smart-phone or tablet. You can't access it on the internet with a web browser.

The app is heavily integrated into other NHS IT systems. It allows you to search local services, access advert free medical information from the NHS website and much more. There are further features planned for the near future including video consultations!

Patient Access

This is the older system that we have been offering for a few years now. There is more flexibility in how you use it - it can be accessed online via a website or with an app on a smart device. However, patient access has the disadvantage of requiring you to register at your GP surgery. This must be done in person with photographic identification and proof of address. The website can be found here. Or download the App on Apple or Android.

How much can I do with online access?

Basic access is the default and allows you to manage appointments and order medications.

Full access to your record - consultations, results, letters, diagnosis codes etc - is granted by application. We encourage you to ask for full access. There will be a short delay in processing a full access request. Why? A minority of records contain sensitive information (e.g. relating to third parties) that need to be removed before the record is released (e.g. carer contact numbers, child protection forms etc). We have a legal obligation to remove these and it is a manual process needing allocated clinician time.

Tell me more.....

The NHS.uk website has lots more information if you wish to read further. Rather than re-print it all here we encourage you to have a look yourself.

We ask you to read Pioneer's guide to What You Need To Know
before you take up full access to your record. This covers the important bits to bear in mind. Please also find here links to a few of the more useful NHS guides to patient access:
