What do I do when I'm pregnant?

Wanted Pregnancy

We hope you are pleased to be pregnant.

  • Do buy some folic acid tablets from the pharmacy and start them straightaway unless you have already been taking them.
  • Stop alcohol and smoking
  • For those on regular medications or with long term conditions it is important to contact you GP or midwife as soon as you know you are pregnant.
  • Visit the following link for advice on what to do and what not to do in pregnancy. There is a lot of information to absorb about diet, vitamins and living well in pregnancy. The earliest few weeks of the pregnancy are the most critical for the development of your baby so it is best to follow this advice whilst trying to get pregnant too.

For the majority of women pregnancy care is provided by the Midwives. They can be contacted in three ways:

Phone     0117 414 6743
Email       bookings.midwifery@nbt.nhs.uk
Web         www.nbt.nhs.uk/antenatalbooking

MyPregnancy App

Southmead's maternity services offer a smart phone app to help guide you through your pregnancy. The MyPregnancy @ NBT smartphone App can be downloaded for free from Apple iTunes or Google Play.

The App is designed to support you to make informed choices about your care in pregnancy and where you would like to give birth and will replace paper Patient Information Leaflets from a number of different sources. However, if you need to receive paper copies of the information as you do not have access to the App please speak to your midwife who will print out copies of the information for you.

Unwanted pregnancy?

We recognise there may be some times when a positive pregnancy test is not what you wanted and you want to discuss your options. Any of the clinicians at Pioneer Medical Group are here to be consulted and help you manage the situation,.  Alternatively Patients can access the NHS funded services provided by Pregnancy Advisory Service (PAS),Marie Stopes International (MSI) and British Pregnancy AdvisoryService (BPAS) by ringing the Unity Central Booking Line on 0345 8725435 to arrange an appointment to discuss their options. Details are available on the website Unity Sexual Health.
