Sexual Health and Contraception

We are able to provide a full range of NHS sexual health and contraceptive services. From free condoms under the 4YP service to contraceptive pills, coils, implant and injections. Please book an appointment with a GP or nurse practitioner.

Sexual health services are also offered by UNITY sexual health; the new unified sexual health service for Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. For information on what the offer and where visit their website. It's excellent!

The service offers a wide range of contraceptive and other sexual health services, including sexually transmitted infection (STI) tests by post. The test kits will look for Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, HIV and syphilis. The results can be sent to you by text, email, post or on the phone. And your results will be kept confidential. You GP will not be told the result unless you ask Unity to tell them to. Unity offer pre-booked and drop in clinics (no appointment) across the Bristol region.

Contraceptive Reviews (Pill Check)

We offer women over the age of 18 years the option to complete contraceptive pill reviews remotely. This saves you having to make a face to face clinician appointment. You will still need to visit the surgery to measure your blood pressure and weight, but you can do this at any time we’re open without an appointment. Please note the service only applies to pill reviews, not new pill starts. Please download the form, complete and return to the reception desk at any of our sites. While at the surgery please measure you blood pressure in our POD and book a telephone follow up

If you are thinking about starting or changing a contraceptive it is well worth your time familiarising yourself of the options. The Family Planning Association produce a wide range of excellent leaflets to help you;

Mini pill (POP)
Combined pill (COCP)
Implant (Nexplanon)
Copper coil (IUD)
Hormonal coil (Mirena)
Injection ('Depot' injection)
Sterilisation (Vasectomy or tube clipping)

In case of accidents we can also provide emergency contraceptives. Emergency Contraception

Emergency Contraception

If it all goes wrong, we offer emergency contraception at our surgeries. Do not delay! Book a same day appointment or ask reception to put you through to our duty doctor for a call back.. If we are not open, e.g. on weekends, contact 111 to find the nearest service that can prescribe. Do not wait until the surgery is open.

Pharmacies supply emergency contraception too. Often free of charge with no wait for an appointment. To find your nearest, text ‘pharmacy emergency contraception [and your post code]’ to 80011.
You will receive a text response with the 3 nearest pharmacies with their names, addresses, telephone numbers and distance from the post code you’ve entered. Other options include walk in centres, Sexual Health clinics, GUM clinics (01173426900) , Contraception clinics (03001237123) and minor injury units.

It is important to remember that emergency contraception is not a reliable method of contraception . At certain high risk times in your cycle it is unknown if any method of emergency contraception will prevent pregnancy. The use of a reliable contraceptive in advance is FAR MORE effective than the use of emergency contraception after intercourse.

Unwanted Pregnancy

If you are pregnant but this isn't right for you now - or just need to discuss your options - you are able to make direct contact with the unwanted pregnancy services without having to see your GP first.

Marie Stopes provides our local service. They can be contacted by phone on 03453008090 or book an appointment directly via their website.
